So far in my internship with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Justice, I’ve read some powerful books that offer insight into Indigenous-settler relations, the history and impact of colonial laws, and the ongoing work of reconciliation. Rather than share a specific personal experience from my two months so far, I felt that the most meaningful contribution I could make at this stage is to recommend resources that have deepened my own understanding.

Here are four books I highly recommend to everyone!

  1. Framing Borders: Principle and Practicality in the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory by Ian Kalman
  2. Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians but Were Afraid to Ask by Anton Treuer
  3. True Reconciliation: How to Be a Force for Change by Jody Wilson-Raybould
  4. 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act by Bob Joseph

I encourage everyone to pick them up. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to chat about them if you do. You can contact me via email: abbigail.whitcher@mail.mcgill.ca
